How is sinusitis different than an allergy or cold?
Though different, sharing similar symptoms sometimes makes it difficult to tell them apart. The common cold is a respiratory viral infection that usually clears up within one week. Nasal discharge usually starts off clear and may thicken before clearing again. The associated swelling of the nasal and sinus passages due to a cold or allergies may limit and block mucus drainage leading to sinusitis. Symptoms including thick, discolored drainage, headache and facial pressure lasting longer than 10 days suggests a sinus infection.
How is sinusitis treated?
For most people, sinusitis is a temporary condition that goes away with simple treatments such as rest, medications for symptom relief, or nasal saline spray. In some cases, depending on symptoms, antibiotics may be prescribed. However, if lingering symptoms continue for a significant period of time without responding to antibiotics or other prescription medications, surgery may be the next, best option.
